Founded in 1979 as the Higher Institute of Technology for Turkish Cypriots, Eastern Mediterranean University evolved through the 1980s—becoming a full-fledged public university in 1986—and has since grown into Northern Cyprus’s leading higher education institution, hosting around 20,000 students from over 100 countries, offering more than 140 academic programs across 12 faculties and 4 schools, teaching in Turkish and English, and earning international accreditations (including ABET) and memberships in bodies like EUA and IAU .

Founded in 1989 by the Cyprus Science Foundation and officially opening its doors in 1990, the European University of Lefke began as a state-trust university and quickly established itself as a regionally significant institution. With full accreditation from Turkey’s YÖK and Northern Cyprus’s YÖDAK from its inception, EUL now offers dozens of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across 12 faculties, 7 schools, and 1 institute, serving over 10,000 students from 65+ countries on its serene Mediterranean campus overlooking Morphou Bay.

Girne American University, the first private university in Northern Cyprus, was founded in 1985 by Serhat Akpınar as University College of Northern Cyprus with just seven students. It gained accreditation from YÖK and YODAK and expanded significantly through the 1990s—developing global partnerships and international campuses. Today, it enrolls over 20,000 students from more than 135 countries across 11 faculties, graduate schools, and vocational institutes, offering American-style, internationally accredited programs, while investing heavily in digital learning, research labs, and student services.

The University of KYRENIA was established in 2013 in Northern Cyprus as a maritime-focused institution, becoming the first university in the country dedicated to maritime studies. It was founded by the Girne American University (GAU) Group, building on their legacy in higher education. Since then, it has expanded into a comprehensive university offering programs across aviation, engineering, health sciences, education, law, economics, and social sciences. Despite its young age, it has rapidly developed into a modern institution known for its specialized faculties, simulation laboratories, and strategic coastal location that supports hands-on learning in fields like maritime and aviation.
