About

The West University of Timișoara (UVT), one of Romania's leading public universities, has a rich academic heritage rooted in 19th-century education. Its foundations trace back to earlier academic traditions in Timișoara, including the establishment of philosophy and law faculties in 1841 and 1845 respectively. Officially, the university was founded on 30 December 1944, by Royal Decree no. 660, comprising faculties of Law, Letters and Philosophy, Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Theology. However, political shifts and educational reforms under communist rule led to its reorganization in 1948 as the Pedagogical Institute of Timișoara, with a focus on teacher training, beginning with the Faculty of Mathematics–Physics. During the 1950s and early 1960s, the institute steadily grew by introducing new faculties such as Natural Sciences, History and Geography, Philology, Physical Education, and Fine Arts. On 27 September 1962, it was re-established as a full university, known as the University of Timișoara, and soon became a hub for regional higher education and research. The post-communist era, following the 1989 Revolution, marked a dynamic phase of revival and expansion. New faculties were added, including Law, Arts and Design, Sociology and Psychology, Music and Theatre, and Political Sciences. In 1994, the university adopted its current name—West University of Timișoara (UVT)—to reflect its regional significance in Western Romania. Today, UVT comprises 11 faculties, offering a wide range of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs in fields like arts, sciences, law, economics, social sciences, and more. With a student body of around 15,000, including many international students, and membership in the European University Alliance (UNITA) and Universitaria Consortium, UVT is known for its academic excellence, interdisciplinary research, and strong European orientation.

Our Legacy

Rich History of Romania and Heritage

Roman Dacia (106 AD) was conquered under Trajan; Roman withdrawal (271 AD) left a Latinized populace that evolved into medieval Romanians. Wallachia and Moldavia formed in the 14th c., paying tribute to the Ottoman Empire while preserving Orthodox faith, and Transylvania remained under Hungarian and Habsburg rule .

The 1859 union of Wallachia and Moldavia created modern Romania, recognized in 1878. After WW I, the 1918–20 unification (“Greater Romania”) included Transylvania. Monarchy yielded to communism post-WW II; the 1989 revolution overthrew Ceaușescu, ushering in democracy, market reforms, and NATO/EU membership .
